The Sustainable Material

For centuries, hemp has been cultivated as a durable and versatile natural material. In Northern Thailand, hemp has been part of local culture and craftsmanship for over a thousand years, valued for its strength, longevity, and low environmental impact. Hemp is highly sustainable. It grows quickly, requires very little water (mostly just rainwater), and needs no pesticides or herbicides. Its deep root system helps prevent soil erosion. Hemp cultivation requires fewer resources than many conventional crops and naturally absorbs carbon dioxide during growth, making it an important material in sustainable production systems.

People & Planet

Every stage of production is completed by hand in collaboration with the Mhong communities of Northern Thailand. This traditional approach supports local livelihoods, preserves cultural knowledge, and avoids the environmental impact of large-scale industrial processing. Ethical farming prioritizes respect for both people and land, ensuring that craftsmanship and sustainability remain closely connected.

Traditional Weaving

Every Shwelf product is woven by hand using traditional loom techniques passed down through generations of Mhong artisans in Northern Thailand. This slow and deliberate process preserves cultural craftsmanship while supporting sustainable, small-scale production methods that avoid the high energy demands of industrial manufacturing.

Hand weaving allows each piece to be made with care, precision, and minimal waste, creating products that are both functional and long-lasting. By supporting generational weaving traditions, Shwelf helps sustain local communities, protect artisanal knowledge, and promote a more human-centred approach to ethical production.

Sustainable Purchasing

Reduce Purchasing • Reduce Waste

Do you really need it?

Sustainability is not only about how products are made, but also how they are consumed. Thoughtful purchasing means choosing quality over excess, avoiding unnecessary impulse buying, and investing in products that are built to last. Buying only what is truly needed reduces waste, lowers environmental impact, and encourages more responsible consumption habits.

Before any purchase, ask yourself 2 simple questions.

Installation & Use

Shwelf is designed to work seamlessly with your existing shower curtain, creating a simple and practical storage solution without adding clutter to your bathroom. Its discreet, utilitarian design keeps your shower toiletries within easy reach while remaining lightweight and minimal.

Made entirely without plastic or metal components, Shwelf is both plastic-free and rust-free. Installation requires no drilling, making it easy to use in both permanent and temporary living spaces. Hemp’s natural properties also make the material mould resistant for approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on how quickly it is able to dry after each use.

If signs of discoloration appear over time, Shwelf can simply be washed on a low temperature using minimal detergent. With each wash, the hemp fibres naturally soften and improve in texture and durability.

100% Biodegradable

Shwelf is made from 100% natural hemp fibre, allowing it to biodegrade back into the earth’s ecosystem at the end of its life cycle. Unlike synthetic materials that can persist in landfills for decades, hemp naturally decomposes without leaving harmful waste behind, supporting a more circular and responsible approach to product design.

Sustainability & Ethics

Shwelf hemp products are designed with sustainability and ethics considered at every stage of their lifecycle. From traditionally grown, CO₂-neutral hemp cultivated in Northern Thailand, to hand-crafted production that supports Mhong communities, every step prioritises low environmental impact and responsible manufacturing.

The product’s durable, plastic-free design encourages long-term use, reduces unnecessary consumption, and avoids wasteful installation methods or disposable materials. Finally, because Shwelf is made from 100% natural hemp, it can safely biodegrade back into the earth at the end of its life, completing a truly circular product cycle.

By combining renewable materials, ethical craftsmanship, practical everyday functionality, and natural biodegradability, Shwelf represents a thoughtful approach to modern sustainable living.
